I was struck by this sign blowing down a Sheffield city centre street one very stormy night a decade ago. Struck both literally, it flew at me like a wild animal luckily leaving just bruising, and as a seemingly unhelpful message. There was no sign of traffic diversion or road works and it was dangerous so I took it away.

Having hung on the wall next to my front door I found it’s meaning has become more multifaceted and sophisticated over time. Any and all of the following thoughts regards it’s meaning have come to mind, each reflecting my current situation.

Your direction of travel is blocked, try another

You’re not allowed that way, that’s your problem

If it’s not working try something else

You’re not stuck, merely going the wrong way

Maybe your expectations need adjusting

Don’t despair, embrace change

There is a better path
