Imperial measures; tool to quantify the spoils of empire, rod to beat children into subservience, signifier of a return to imagined glories. The ‘yardstick’ against which all are judged.

I don’t remember being hit with a yard ruler; a foot ruler, yes. Certainly yardstick were carried around by a few teachers, used like a ‘swagger stick’ to point, prod and generally display their authority.
